Left without a decent player... :(

I have a Minix U1 and was very pleased with how it worked for quite some time with XBMC 16.3. But as mentioned in the forum, the Movie Scraper stopped working. I can read and write English, but I prefer to have my movie info in Dutch. So after a month with Universal Movie Scraper I took the plunge to update XBMC. Wished I've never done that. First everything is beta or alpha, and very confusing links to what is official. Downloaded what I think was XBMC 17.3 because there is a lot of talk that 17.4 isn't working wel on the U1. Tried to install, but no go. Then I deleted XBMC 16.3 and the install went fine. But I never backed up my database, so I could start from scratch again. XBMC 17.3 is terrible, it hangs, it freezes, I can't work with this. So I tried Kodi 17.4. First a download directly from kodi.tv but would install either. Seemed that I already had a Kodi version, so deleted that to. Then a download via Google Playstore and that went well. Took me 2 hours to put all the settings right and started testing. No Dolby surround and movie skips a frame every second or so. Als with XBMC when I watched a 3D movie the Minix communicated well with my TV and put up the 3D settings on my tv so I only had to confirm it. With Kodi no such thing. Also the frame rate settings are not working. My tv gets no signal as to what hertz setting is has to be. This is probably why the movie skips a frame once every few seconds.

Ok, long story short; there are a lot of movie player options out there, but at this point no decent stable one. The last 'final' XBMC is from half 2016! Yes I read Ken saying that it is constantly evolving. But please guys, stick to one version and make that one final before rushing after the next version. 16.3 also never went final.

If you guys at Minix think that Kodi/XBMC 17.4 is the best bet, put al your efforts into making this a stable version. If you never stop and make one thing final, were left with a bunch of half working software and thats not why I bought the Minix. I just wanted a simple machine that played my movies from a hard drive. I don't like to tinker and I don't want to read a whole evening just to get things working. I work hard and when I want to relax I want to watch a movie and not be frustrated because my whole evening went to waste because I had to reinstall a whole bunch of programs that don't work in the end.

I think there are more people like me who would like a stable version at this point. Thanks in advance!

Maybe to clarify, I know there are a lot of ticks you can turn of or on. And I've learned that even one tick can mess up your hole experience. I always go trough my settings in Expert mode, but it takes a lot of trail and error to find just the right settings. Sorry, I'm a Apple guy, all my machines 'just work'... I'm lazy and spoiled! Hahahahaha...

What happens if you play off your harddisk using another player on the u1?
And if you copy a movie onto the u1 and then play it in kodi?

Alternatively (this is how i do the scraping), i use TMM on a pc first, scrape the movie and download all art. after creating the nfo file i copy the whole set to my nas. I have 6 minix boxes (x7mini, x8h+, u9) all on different kodi and xbmc versions. This way i never get any scraping issues since xbmc/kodi look for the local nfo and art files first
Its a slight bit more hassle. But it makes you immune for the scraping issue i read about

I have a Minix U9-H and use it as a dedicated Media Player. I have only had the unit for a week replacing an out-dated Medi8er device.
To have the system pass the "wife approval" test - simple to use and choose and operate from a single remote, my set up is as follows:

    1. Latest update on Minix (FW006 20170810)
    2. XCBM Launcher set up to boot direct to Kodi 17.4 Krypton vanilla configuration with Estuary Skin
    3. NAS media folders mapped as favourites - Movies HD, TV Shows, Documentaries, Music (Added as NFS file system from QNAP NAS)
    4. Scraping done on my NAS using my PC via TMM with Kodi looking to local source for info and artwork (allows better control of images etc.)
    5. Audio set to HDMI pass through in KODI and Minix to go direct to my Denon AVR (Full pass-thru for Dolby HD, DTS to my surround sound system)
    6. System controlled by Logitech Harmony One remote

Entire system (AVR, Minix, TV) turns on with one remote button, and powers off with one remote button.

I don't think this is the problem. I have a 6GB drive hooked to my Synology Router and acces it trough smb. That works perfect. It comes down to the simple task I ask from the Minix; Look at my 'Movie Folder', create a library and present me a video wall with all my movies. When I select one, I want you to play that file just as it is (they are all mkv's). Pass the sound and picture to my Yamaha Receiver, which is connected to my Samsung tv and they will take care of the rest. My receiver understands which Dolby to use, and my Samsung knows which hertz the movie is. The Minix doesn't have to meddle with that. Just play the damn movie.

I understand what you're saying, but for me this is a workaround. I only have 1 media player in the house, and I bought it because it is capable of doing this for me automatic. But thanks for thinking along with me.

This is exactly the way I want it to work, besides a few differences like the NAS. Again, just a media player that creates a library and play the movies. Nothing more! But I understand that people want options, and the Minix is used in many different ways. I thought that playing files was it's core, but because of all the options this doesn't work flawless anymore...

In the mean time I deleted Minix XBMC 17.3 and was thinking of trying out Minix XBMC 17.4. Next I could (but don't really want to) try Kodi directly from their website and was thinking the ARMV8A (64BIT) version. But I was hoping I could stick to Minix version, because that one will be the best suited because they were build for their own devices. So hopefully a stable version soon!!!

I pulled down Kodi 17.4 from the app store, as my Minix had 17.4 beta loaded on it. As it stands, my system pretty much does what JeroenR wants his to do. I only had two initial issues:
    1. Getting the audio pass through correct, but that that was only due to having to set the audio up in both minix settings and kodi settings. A quick browse of the forum here fixed that.
    2. How to browse to an NFS file system to add media sources from my NAS (Needed to enter IP address...)

Otherwise, all is good in regards to passing "wife certification"

I still have the app store Kodi on my Minix, so I will give it another try and go trough the settings. Perhaps I did mis something.
Do you have audio passthrough HDMI or something else?

@Decibel (or anybody else), can anyone provide me with screenshots of their "Player settings -> Videos" and "System settings -> Audio"?
    My setup:
    Minix U1, Android 5.1.1, Firmware LMY47V.20170629
Yamaha AVR (4K and supports all sound formats)
    Samsung HD-TV (1080p very young and high-end)
I only have Full-HD mkv's with ac3, Dolby, DTS or higher and everything is only connected trough hdmi.

Just uninstalled al Kodi's, so there were no players left on the system. Installed Kodi/XBMC 17.3 (build: xbmc 17.3 Git: 20170617-ba02cae) from this forum. Went trough all the settings but still having problems with sound and image. As with xbmc 16.3 the movie seems to have to buffer, so the first 30 seconds stutter a little bit. But now with 17.3 even after 1 minute the picture still isn't smooth. And in this case the movie had DTS and that hiccuped every 15 seconds. On my Yamaha you can see which speakers are activated and the system correctly mentioned 5, but when the sound hiccuped, these icons disappeared a fraction of a second (I hope this makes sense).
So in my conclusion the Minix is doing something wrong or doing to much. And has to do something with the Video or Audio settings. Oh and yes, throughout the Minix (Minix settings and Kodi settings) I selected "Audio pass trough hdmi".
But there are so many settings and possibilities, I don't know what to do anymore. I tried a lot of settings, but no improvement. Can anybody shed a light? In xbmc 16.3 everything worked flawless. But the same settings don't apply anymore (I made screenshots before I erased 16.3)
Below are screenshots of my current 17.3 settup.

probably better off using kodi 17.4 installed from the kodi website

adjust display refresh rate > on stop/start ( and set delay to a sec or so in player settings)
    audio channels > 2.0
enable both media codecs ( no amcodec in kodi 17.4)

Well I'll be darned, it works! So setting the audio channels to 2.0 gives me 5.1 on my surround. Can't get my head around that, but it strengthens my initial comment that the settings are to overwhelming and not logical, at least for me. But just watched a movie flawless like I used to. Thanks @Frederick_99!!!
Will stick to the official Kodi for now.

Now I am only afraid when my 4K oled arrives next week and going to try 4K hdr on the Minix...

Fredreck_99 was quicker than I to respond. Glad you are all sorted. The Kodi settings are fine. The inherent android settings are what confused me initially as well.

Hopefully the 4K OLED will work as well.

Does refresh rate switching even work with native Kodi 17.4 on the U1?

The U1 doesn't support HDR output. You need the U9-H for that.

    mmmm...good question...im not sure

i have a U1 and a firestick both running kodi 17.4 on a 1080i 60Hz TV and there is no refresh rate changes

i have a U9 and a firestick both running kodi 17.4 on a 1080p 60Hz TV and they both adapt to framerate

so Kodi 17.4 must support framerate switching but i cant definitely confirm it does on the U1 unless i try it....???

Does official Kodi 17.4 work with autoframe rate switching in Minix U1? (from 60p to 24p etc)

    Thanks

It was a rhetorical question ;) Refresh rate switching works only with amcodec acceleration on the U1 and since Kodi 17.4 doesn't support amcodec, refresh rate switching will not work. It will work with XBMC for Minix 17.4 and SPMC 17.4 since they both support amcodec acceleration.

    No.

Is this thru? Quote from the specs:
Up to 10-bit, doesn't that suggest HDR? And the 2.0 HDMI?

I feel all your pain. It's more or less two years I keep on fighting with my Minix to trying to have a smooth movie player, and I still didn't find a definitive solution.

If you only need Kodi the best option is to install OpenElec (or LibreElec, can't remember at the moment) via USB key (very slow) or overwriting Minix's Android. It's a basic Linux OS that only plays Kodi.
    Perfectly.

In my case, since I use other programs, I need Android. The optimal solution would be updating the machine to Android 6, but Minix guys don't want to. So we're stuck on 5 and last Kodi removed support from some old Android accelerator libraries.

The best compromise I've found so far is Playstore Kodi 17.4. It perfectly works for 90% of my movies. And watch the rest with beta XBMC from Minix.

As I said, keeping editing official releases to adapt them to U1 from Minix guys is a waste of time. Kodi releases come out very often, so they have to stop working on old version and start on new, with the result that we'll never come out from betas and half working software.
They should contact Kodi stuff, maybe offer them some money and have them implement support for their devices. That's the only way to give their paying customers (us) what they paid for.

I think Minix devices are very high quality and very well done. But if things keep going this way, my next player will be a much cheaper no brand Chinese one. If I've to spend my nights fighting with settings, at least I'll save some money. :)

I have had issues since day one with my u9h and kodi 17.3 and 17.4. Neither like to work after a power resume which is a real pain in the backside for my family and friends and a time waster for me. I have less issues with my 7ish year old wdtv units.
