Minix U9-H and Netflix

Like a lot of you, I have had nothing but issues with Netflix after purchasing the U9-H. I know it's not Minix fault, it's Netflix. What's ironic is that my sister n laws Neo U1 has no issues with Netflix nor does my X8-H. Just this new streaming device.

Issues that I have had -
Netflix says it is incompatible with my device. (clear the netflix cache in settings)
Netflix opens and then states Connection Failed (restart your device and also clear the cache again)
Netflix opens and then throws Error 12001 (clear the data in settings and then restart the device)

So, I found on the web this information about Netflix, I'm 100% sure the Minix people know of it already but for those of you frustrated with Netflix on your Minix devices, give this a read. It explains a lot of the issues with Netflix in general.

Yes Netflix does have issues on those devices, both of which do not have Widevine L1 or HDCP 1.4 DRM certificates (streaming copy protection)
You just do not know about them yet. Max Netflix resolution on those devices is 480p = pretty poor.

The U9 can actually do 1080p Netflix with the right mods and Firmware (click) ;)
Some of the info in that old Androidpcreview article is no longer relevant due to recent Netflix & Google Policy changes.

The reason why I posted it was not so much about the resolution, was just more about Netflix making changes on the back end regarding their clients and not supporting android streaming devices. Thanks for the link, I will check it out on my old X8:cool:

It all boils down to licensing. If you go to Netflix's website, they list the authorized boxes. There are patched versions that work very well. But until Netflix changes their policies, most all Android boxes will have the same issue. These days, because of 4k, I use the Netflix app on my TV.

A Webpage such as that is frankly pretty useless if you really wanted an up to date list of so called Netflix Authorised devices.

For example I see no mention on that Webpage of the properly Android TV licensed - 4K Netflix capable, NVIDIA Shield or Xiaomi Mi Box.

I actually think these days all you need is the correct DRM and HDCP certificates and proper supporting Android Framework to satisfy Netflix server requests and you are good to go. (y)

Some LibreELEC Kodi Leia developers are also testing out 720/1080p Netflix streaming using a similar method by implementing a minimal Google Chromium framework.

I Agree. Netfilx does't spend too much time informing the public as to which devices work. The big problem with modifications and hacks is, it really only applies to about 10 to 20% of streaming box owners. The rest rely on OTC devices. Netflix should step up and make their app work on any device. It would surely help their revenue, since as many people cancel the service that get the service.

I couldn't agree more ! ...... why Netflix choose to potentially loose revenue is mind baffling !

It not about Netflix revenue but about contracts with Hollywood original content suppliers - who would demand the best possible copy protection available.
Netflix's streaming servers enforce this with DRM Authentication handshaking procedures.

The decision process is all about Risk assessment, which means cheap risky Android video players get kicked to the curb.
Which is all pretty laughable for 1080p Netflix on any device due to the HDCP 1.x workarounds found out on the internet that allow copying of such streams by resourceful tech individuals.

Which points back to revenue. They have to keep their suppliers happy.

True! Netflix agreements with content providers have several pages long (~10 pages) sections that explicitly talk about security requirements separately for HD and UHD content. It mentions software, hardware devices and digital output requirements. It also mentions what happens to the agreement in the event a security breach is discovered. I would say that Netflix have their hands tied by the content providers.

HDCP stripping splitters are not easily found these days. There was a design flaw (?intentional) in the early HDCP 1.x and 2.0 splitters which has been corrected now. As far as Netflix is concerned, they have no control on what the subsrciber does to the digital output after is leaves the streaming device.

I see nVIDIA Shield listed under streaming media players. Xiaomi Mi is missing, but I think that is because it is not fully vetted. Netflix ESN on the Xiaomi will show "TRIAL".

Follow instructions in the Android TV ROM thread and create a FW006 backup - all the info is in that thread.
You need to read that thread.

And no 5.1 Audio with Netflix at all with any release.
